Studio Akkerhuis + Archiworkshop won 3rd place in the Incheon Museumpark international design competition.
Emerging from the traces of the past and providing a soothing and colourful place for pause and respiration in the middle of a rapidly growing new district, the Incheon Museum Park has been conceived as a generous and unique ecological ecosystem that shelters an open and inviting cultural hub for the future inhabitants and visitors of the complex.
In one inclusive dynamic, a large planted roof spanning across the land, extends the existing hill into a new landscape that unifies the fragmented and heterogeneous conditions of the site. Bringing together elements of different typology, scale, topography and from different time periods, this green infrastructure allows the emergence of two clearly distinct identities for the City museum and the Art museum.
Whereas the History museum unfolds horizontally above and below the roof in one continuous promenade sequence, the art museum rises vertically on top of the OCI building becoming a future landmark for Incheon Metropolitan city.
In contrast with the dense and luscious vegetation on the roof, the ground level is more mineral and urban. With large empty areas around the site, the exterior public space offers many possibilities of special events. The south oriented steps merging into the roof can serve as an amphitheatre for planned or spontaneous artistics or musical performances.
By enhancing the past and magnifying the present reality of the site, we aim to generate a new urban typology where the tectonic and the aerial, the solid and the translucent, the vegetal and the mineral, the organic and the rational coexist and intertwine to become a beloved and sought after gathering place for the citizens.
