Shedding a new light on Yeouido, where political, financial, and media institutions are already well established, the 2nd SCPA is the opportunity to create a new iconic cultural landmark that can also enhance the ecological potential of the island.
The Performing Arts Center plays a key role in the transformation of the park. It establishes an attractive underpass between the River park and Yeouido Park. It adds an important program along the park’s urban axis.
Water is an important connecting element between the park and the river in various forms: with new drinking fountains, a meandering water stream that adds natural quality to the space underneath the Yeouiseo road, the existing water playground and a public pool in the Han River.
By continuing the park on the elevated platform, with a thick layer of soil so trees can grow tall, the negative impact of the building on the park is minimized. By creating a fluent connection to the roof of the building, and adding a stage and a garden there, new valuable features are added to the park.
Vice versa, the park will act as the foyer of the performing arts center, allowing visitors to arrive in the late afternoon, relishing a stroll through the park, enjoying dinner and street music at the Yeouido Plaza, and culminating with a visit to the performing arts center for an evening show.
After the performance, visitors can ascend to the roof for a last drink, savoring the breathtaking nighttime view of the Han River and its surroundings.
By enhancing the present conditions of the site, we aim to generate a new urban typology where the tectonic and the aerial, the vegetal and the mineral, the solid and the translucent, the organic and the rational coexist and intertwine to create an open and inviting cultural amenity that will become a beloved and sought after gathering place for all citizens.
