The design team received an honorable mention (7/105) for the quality of the architectural concept of the proposition.
The aim was to create a building that not only fits the location and atmosphere of the Tartu downtown,
but also forms a whole with the urban space along the river Emajõgi. Our proposal includes a public library, an art museum, an event center, and other spaces that support the cultural center, all designed to create a synergy between various fields of culture.
The building is user-friendly, sustainable, and energy-efficient, with optimal construction and maintenance costs.
We have carefully considered the surrounding landscape to create a biodiverse, varied park landscape that makes the city-center more pedestrian-friendly. Our aim was to create a modern place for the new Tartu Art Museum to exhibit the masterpieces of Estonian art hidden in their collections, and a place to host world class guest exhibitions.
The library will bring literature and reading within reach of everyone, promoting extracurricular education and lifelong learning. The center will also bring more events to Tartu and host world-class cultural luminaries, significantly attracting more people. Importantly, the building follows the principles of climate positivity and ensuring biodiversity, creating a consumption-free public space that is accessible to everyone, holding true to the values of Tartu, where culture and community are at its core.
